A strong earthquake occurred in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Teresa Island in the Nicobar Islands on 8 January 2007 at 18:18 local time. The earthquake had a magnitude of Mw=6.1.

The earthquake was centre
d 64.1 kms WSW of Kalara (Teresa Island, Nicobars), India,
86.7 kms WNW of Changhipoh (Kachall Island, Nicobars), India,
122 kms SSW of Malacca IAF Base (Car Nicobar Island), India,
154 kms NW of Cape Edinburgh (Little Nicobar Island), India,
195 kms NW of Campbell Bay (Great Nicobar Island), India,
276 kms S of Hut Bay (Little Andaman Island), India,
397 kms S of Port Blair (South Andaman Island), India.

This is the strongest earthquake in this immediate region since the Mw=7.3 Teresa Island earthquake of 24 July 2005. If you felt this earthquake please take the time to fill out a felt report questionnaire. This earthquake is believed to have been felt as far as Port Blair on South Andaman Island. Press reports of unusual swells out to sea reported by fishermen off the Nagapattinam coast of Tamil Nadu as well as the "frequent & sudden" recession of the sea along the same coastline were not related to this earthquake.
