A light
earthquake (M4.0-4.9 termed as light) struck
Chamoli and
Bageshwar districts in Uttarakhand near the villages of Dwali and
Lilam on 2
May
2010 at 04:06 AM local time. It had a magnitude of Mb=4.5
and was felt in several parts of eastern Uttarakhand
apart from causing minor damage at a few places the Pindar Valley in Chamoli
district.

The earthquake was centred
7 kms E of Lilam (Uttarakhand), India,
16 kms SSE of Nanda Kot peak (Uttarakhand), India,
37 kms NNE of Udiyari (Uttarakhand), India,
49.6 kms NE of Bageshwar (Uttarakhand), India,
62 kms NNW of Pitoragarh (Uttarakhand), India,
73 kms SE of Joshimath (Uttarakhand), India,
85.5 kms ESE of Gopeshwar (Uttarakhand), India,
106 kms NE of Nainital (Uttarakhand), India,
131 kms E of Srinagar (Uttarakhand), India,
205 kms ESE of Dehradun (Uttarakhand), India.
This earthquake was
strongly felt at Gopeshwar and in the Pindar Valley in Chamoli
district where people ran screaming out of their homes. Some
buildings in the Pindar Valley developed cracks. Elsewhere in
Chamoli district, it was felt at Adbadri (Chaandpur Patti area),
Karnaprayag, Nainisen, Nauti and Simli in the Karnaprayag area. In
the Gauchar area, people were woken up at Bhatnagar, Gauchar,
Panai, Rawalnagar and Sidoli. In the Narayanbagar area near
Tharali, residents were frightened and went outdoors at Burjola,
Chopta, Gwaldham, Harmani, Kulsari, Lolti, Maal, Solpatti and
Talwari. The walls of the Jajjar Bhavan in the primary school
complex at Raei developed cracks while walls of kutchha buildings
in Jabbarkot also developed cracks.
Buildings and outhouses also
developed cracks at Maal, Kamlanand, and Hanskoti, also in the
Narayanbagar area. In the Debal area, tremors were felt at Boragad,
Melkhet and Mundoli. Light tremors were reported from Srinagar (Gharwal).
Tremors were also felt at Dhasholi where it revived memories of
the 1999 Chamoli earthquake. In Bageshwar district, it was felt at
Bageshwar where people were frightened and went outdoors. In
Rudraprayag district, there was some panic and people went
outdoors at Agustmuni, Phata, Rudraprayag and Tilwara.
